St. Asicus. Our school is called after Saint Asicus . It was opened on April 2 nd , 1981. This means that our school is 30 years old on April 2 nd this year. Asicus didn’t think that he was worthy of his high office as bishop.

St. Asicus Our school is called after Saint Asicus. It was opened on April 2nd, 1981. This means that our school is 30 years old on April 2nd this year.
Asicus didn’t think that he was worthy of his high office as bishop. Asicus left Roscommon and travelled to Rathlin O'Beirne Island in Donegal Bay.
Asicus becomes a hermit He resigned his office and became a hermit. He lived for a while at the top of SliabhLiag (Slieve League) in Donegal. He remained there for seven years
Some of the monks of Elphin came in search of him. They persuaded him to return to Elphin with them. By now Asicus was not in good health.
Death of Asicus Asicus died on the journey back to Elphin (circa. 490 AD). He is buried where he died ~ between Ballyshannon and Donegal town
Asicus the coppersmith St. Asicus is the patron saint of coppersmiths. He was a skilled coppersmith and silversmith. He made altars, chalices, patens, and metal book-covers for the newly founded churches.
His copper work can be seen in the Cathedral in Sligo. You can see a shamrock patterned beaten brass altar screen
In the Cathedral you can also see a wooden statue of St. Asicus. It is thought to be the only statue of St. Asicus in existence.

Who was teaching here in 1981? Mr. Shields was the school principal at the time. Mrs. O’ Grady also taught in the school.
