  1. How to Develop a Grant Proposal for Strowd Roses Grants for projects in the CHCCS for Student Enrichment Grants (SEGs) for Achievers’ Fund Grants and more Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation

  2. Strowd Roses Fund • For any project developed by Professional Learning Communities • Geared for grade-level, school-wide or district-wide projects; generally not suited for individual classroom projects • Related to instructional goals of the district

  3. Strowd Roses Fund • Can range from $2000-$8,000 • RFP Review • Advance proposal review available • Deadline: January 25 (or the following Monday if this date falls on a weekend)

  4. Student Enrichment Grants (SEGs) • Funded by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation • Average grant awarded is $500; more than $20,000 available in 2009 • Addresses one or more of the district’s goals • Specific grants for history, science, math and technology, ESL, international teacher travel, and the arts as well as general grants • Does not fund teacher salaries, food items

Specific SEGs for 2010 (1 of 3) Chapel Hill Historical Society Grant • Address local history in some way • Usually one grant of $2500; $1000-$1500 awarded in May and $1000 at the completion of the project directly to the teacher Elmo’s ELL Grants • Address needs of ELL students and multicultural education • Average grant is < $500

  6. Specific SEGs for 2010 (2 of 3) Margaret Kepner Fund • For science or technology related projects • Up to $1000 awarded annually • May be awarded to one large or several smaller grants Arts Grant • Funded through Orange Co. Arts Comm.

  7. Specific SEGs for 2010 (3 of 3) GlaxoSmithKline Fund • For science, math or literacy projects • $200-$2,000 The Chapel Hill Restaurant Group Fund for International Teacher Travel • $1000 grant related to travel to support the curriculum • May be supplemented with other grant requests

SEG Timeline for 2010 (1 of 2) • Announcement of grants • Feb. 25--Grant proposals due to PSF • March --Grant proposals reviewed • March/April --Recommendation of SEG allocations presented to CHCPSF Board • May--Announcement of SEG grant awardees • May 2010—SEGs announced at CHCCS School Board Meeting

  9. SEG Timeline for 2010 (2 of 2) • Grants generally cover one school year, with a start date in July and completion date in the following spring • An evaluation of the grant is required to be submitted to CHCPSF at the completion of the grant and by the end of the implementation year

  10. Achievers’ Fund • Students who can benefit from additional academic support, enrichment, supplies and/or equipment (such as a band instrument) • Evaluation required by project director and/or teacher/service providing support

  11. Achievers’ Fund • Can support tutoring after school, in summer through district teachers or outside services • Can support enrichment such as special interest classes, camps, the arts, academic team competitions

Donors Choose • DonorsChoose.org is a website that connects teachers who need resources for their classroom with individuals who want to fund their classroom needs. • Public school teachers, district-employed guidance counselors, social workers, and librarians can logon to DonorsChoose.org and submit requests to meet their students’ needs.

  16. Here’s How It Works: • You register at DonorsChoose.org and request a resource your students need. • An individual searches and funds your request. • Donors Choose e-mails you to confirm that you still need the resources you requested. • You respond to the confirmation e-mail within SIX days. • Supplies are shipped to your classroom, along with a feedback package (a manila envelope, an instruction sheet, and a disposable camera).

  17. How Donors Choose Works (2) • You teach the lesson and use the disposable camera to photograph the resources in action. • You and your students complete short thank you notes for the donor who bought your supplies. • You mail the disposable camera and the thank you notes to DonorsChoose.org, in the prepaid envelope provided in your feedback kit.
