Update on the progress of the Button Battery Collection Committee in Japan for proper treatment of mercury waste. The Battery Association of Japan introduced a voluntary scheme in 2009 to collect spent button batteries. The collection outlets, including DIY and grocery stores, increased significantly. The new scheme replaced the old one, resulting in 1.8 times more collections. Sampling research showed a higher ratio of mercury-free batteries in grocery and DIY shops. The overall mercury-free ratio doubled from the previous year. Proper disposal and treatment of mercury waste were ensured, with no batteries ending up in landfills. The results from FY2010 and the transition to the new scheme indicate a positive trend towards increased collection of button batteries for responsible recycling.
