Chapter 15 – 4Warm - Up • 1. What is white light? • 2. What part of the eye doesn’t function properly when you are colorblind? • 3. List the color spectrum in order.
Chapter 15 - 4 Mirrors and Lenses
Light Rays • Light Ray – a line in space that matches the direction of the flow of radiant energy
Virtual Images • Virtual Image – an image that forms at a location from which light rays appear to come but do not actually come
Real Images • Real Image – an image of an object formed by light rays that actually come together at a specific location
Concave Mirrors • If the surface of a mirror is curved inward, it is called a concave mirror • Reflects light in a unique way
Convex Mirrors • A mirror that curves outward like the back of a spoon is called a convex mirror • Light rays spread out
Convex Lenses • Convex lens - thicker in the middle than at the edges
Concave Lenses • Concave lens is thinner in the middle and thicker at the edges
Lenses and Eyesight • Light enters your eye through a transparent covering on your eyeball called the cornea
Lenses and Eyesight • The light then passes through an opening called the pupil • Lens - helps focus light rays formed on your retina
Focusing Near and Far • The lens in your eye is flexible • Muscles attached to it change its shape to focus
Telescopes • As the object moves farther away, the amount of light entering your eye decreases • Uses a lens or a concave mirror to gather more of the light from an object
Microscopes • Microscope - uses two convex lenses to magnify small, close objects
