  3. THEME #1: LOCATION • Mexico’s absolute location is 24 degrees North and 103 degrees West • Mexico’s relative location is in the Western Hemisphere part of North America, South of the United States of America and North of Guatemala and Belize.

  4. THEME #2: PLACE • Mexico’s physical characteristics: • Include many mountain ranges in the west, east, and south • Plateaus in the center and narrow coasts.

  5. HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS • The people of Mexico are 60% Mestizo, 30% Amerindian, 9% Caucasian, 1% other • 87% literacy rate • Language is Spanish and many Mayan dialects • 89% Catholic, 9% other

  6. THEME #3 H.E.I. • Mexicans have adapted to their environment to create farms, mines, drilling for oil, manufacturing, and building large cities

  7. HOW THEY USE THE LAND • Meadows and pastures = 39% • Forest = 24% • Mining = 1.5% • Agriculture = 28% • Manufacturing = 11.1% • Oil & Petrochemicals = N.A.

  8. THEME #4: MOVEMENT • EXHANGE OF PEOPLE, GOODS AND IDEAS • Original peoples are Amerindian, Mestizo are a mix of Amerindian and Spanish.

MOVEMENT CONTINUED… • Few people migrate, growth is natural • Many migrate to the U.S.A. = “Pull” factor • Many people vacation in the resort enclaves, Mexico City, and ancient ruins • Exports = crude oil, petrochemicals, coffee, shrimp, engines, cars, cotton, & electronics • Imports = agricultural machinery, aircraft • Mexican foods, music, & language in the U.S.A.

  10. HOW IS THIS REGION LIKE THE REST OF NORTH AMERICA? NAFTA: North America Free Trade Agreement. U.S. Canada, & Mexico are trading partners HOW IS THIS REGION UNLIKE THE REST OF NORTH AMERICA? Culturally part of “Latin America” Language = Spanish Religion = Catholic THEME #5: REGION

  12. POLITICAL ISSUES • Vincente Fox is the President of Mexico • Their government consists of an Executive Branch, a Legislative Branch, and a Judicial Branch • Problems are mass migration to the North and unrest in the South

NATIONALISM IN MEXICO • Nationalism is the strong pride a people share in their country • The 5 Nations of Mexico share a strong pride in their own region, but do they have it for their country? • The different class structures and regions present an obstacle to a untied Mexico • Colonialism has had a lasting and negative effect on Mexicans having true Nationalism
