  2. Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease Gastro-esophageal (GERD) is one of the most prevalent health problems, with about 10-20% western population having symptomatic GERD. It describes the symptoms or damage to the lining of the food pipe and is caused by reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. reflux disease

GERD – Symptoms The typical symptoms include heartburn which is identified by the discomfort or burning sensation behind the breastbone and regurgitation of stomach contents to the back of the throat. Atypical symptoms include chest pain, upper abdominal bloating, and frequent burping Other than these, GERD is also associated with a change in voice ❏ ❏ ❏ GERD – Risk Factors Lifestyle with smoking, alcohol, caffeine, and obesity Younger patients suffer mostly from GERD symptoms, but elderly with a family history of GERD are also prone to risk Other factors include pregnancy, hiatus hernia, food pipe mobility problems, certain medications, and medical and psychological problems. ❏ ❏ ❏

  5. GERD – Treatment Lifestyle modificationslike weight loss practices, lesser consumption of alcohol and spicy food, avoidance of smoking, and going to bed on a light stomach are recommended. Raising the head at the end of the bed can also help. Medical Treatment involves proton-pump inhibitors along with antacid medicines that are effective for treatment of GERD. H2 receptor antagonists and prokinetic drugs have been used in the past. Surgical Treatment involves anti-reflex surgery, which creates a mechanical barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. ❏ ❏ ❏ Consult a gastroenterologist if you experience symptoms suggestive of GERD.
