  2. Purpose of this Section Help you understand what research costs, how their budgets are structured, what you can/can’t ask for, and what’s in it for your institution.

  3. Typical Proposal Budget The average proposal amount for me over my 22 years here: about $200k. The smallest outside proposal I won was $30k. I have been on teams for >$1M about 3 times (we got 2/3). It’s a justification for the funding agency and an organizational tool for the proposer. In addition to paying for people, materials, equipment, tuition etc, your parent institution gets a cut: overhead. Let’s make a sample budget so you can see . . .
