The Vision… • Vision • The NIMHD envisions an America in which all populations will have an equal opportunity to live long, healthy and productive lives. • Mission • Lead scientific research to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities. • How • Plans, reviews, coordinates, and evaluates all minority health and health disparities research and activities of the National Institutes of Health • Conducts and supports research on minority health and health disparities • Promotes and supports the training of a diverse research workforce • Translates and disseminates research information • Fosters innovative collaborations and partnerships

  3. What are Health Disparities? • The NIH defines health disparities as differences in the incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, and burden of diseases and other adverse health outcomes that exist among specific population groups. 

  4. What Population Groups are of Interest? • Racial and Ethnic Minorities (including subpopulations): • African Americans; • American Indians/Alaska Natives; • Asian Americans; • Hispanic Americans; • Native Hawaiians, and other U.S. Pacific Islanders • Socioeconomically Disadvantaged; and • Residents in Rural Areas.

Key Strategies • Outreach is a core commitment • Engage Communities (including Health Care Providers) in the Research Process • Harness the Power and Insights of Diverse Communities • Identify/Eliminate the Barriers these Communities Encounter • Barriers: Cultural, Environmental, Economic, Physical, Knowledge • Translate/Commercialize Research Findings
