Consider this analogy: • Your essay is like taking someone on a ride in a taxi. • When you reach your destination, you don’t just slam on brakes and tell your passenger, “GET OUT!” • You ease on the brakes, and say “goodbye” when your passenger steps out. • A courteous goodbye increases your chance of getting a good tip!

  3. Pointers • SYNTHESIZE, DON’T SUMMARIZE! • A synthesis shows how the points fit together. • You can remind readers of your points, but don’t restate (repeat) them. • Don’t introduce any new ideas. • Refer back to introduction. (gives essay a sense of completeness/closure) • Answer the “So what” question and the “Why should anybody care” question.

  4. Important! • Don’t use the following transitions to begin your conclusion: • In conclusion, • In closing, • To conclude, • These transitions are trite (over-used and not creative).

  6. Pack a punch! • Your conclusions should pack a punch just as your introduction did. • Give your reader the courteous goodbye he/she deserves. • Give them a sense of satisfaction!
