  1. The following tips for raising children are drawn from Plutarch, philosopher of ancient Rome, and modern-day science (@LiveScience.com).Can you tell who recommended what?

  2. Lighten up! Joking with your toddler helps set them up for social success. When parents joke and pretend, it gives young kids the tools to think creatively, make friends and manage stress.

  3. Sleeping around with too many people prior to conceiving your own child will damage their reputation as well as your own. A child’s reputation is often marked by the actions and behaviors of their parents.

  4. Parents who express negative emotions toward their infants or handle them roughly are likely to find themselves with aggressive children which can lead to aggression later in life, even toward future romantic partners.

  5. It won’t kill the kids to learn how to say “Please” “Thank you”, hold the door open for others or to assist little old ladies across the street. However old-fashioned they may sound, good manners never go out of style and help children to create a polite society.

  6. It is inevitable that all children will leave their parents’ home. When the time comes for kids to fly the nest, let them go. Delaying that inevitable occurrence results in children who are more likely to be anxious, self-conscious and less open to new experiences.

  7. Reading, writing, & arithmetic aren’t the only desirable products of a good education. Values, morals, manner and virtue can also result from sound schooling.

  8. Parents' relationships with their children are extremely important and that's how children develop their ability to have successful relationships as adults.

  9. Praise children when appropriate so they learn what is good & desirable. Criticize when necessary to prevent children from doing harm.

  10. Parents: you ain’t perfect. Don’t expect your kids to be the same. Expectations of perfection can only result in heartache, disappointment, strained relations & failure.
