Florida Biotech Program: Developing Rigorous Biotechnology Programs

Alignment of Standards (Performance, Next Generation Sunshine State, National) to Industry • History, Career Fields, Benefits of Biotech • Safety Procedures • Quality Control and Regulatory Guidelines • Communication/Interpersonal Skills • Scientific Inquiry, Calculations, Analysis • Organism Structure & Function • Materials Processing/SOP’s for Biotech • Biotech Materials Analysis • Basic Chemistry Applied to Biotech Procedures • Microbiology and Blood Borne Diseases • Legal and Ethical Responsibilities • Literacy and Computer Skills applied to Biotech • Employability Skills

Development Phase • Analysis of Secondary Biotechnology Curriculum • Ensure core competencies met • Delineate core for post-secondary alignment • Analysis of/Alignment with post-secondary Biotech • Identification of complementary academic courses (secondary/post-secondary) • For inclusion into POS, additional post-secondary credit, and ensure success at post-secondary level

Secondary POS Recommendations Program Entrance Program Completion Minimum Maintained GPA Biotechnology 3.0 Overall 3.0 Completion Above requirements met Grade of “B” or higher on industry-recognized exam for certification • Entrance Requirements • Letters of Recommendation • Math Teacher • Science Teacher • Minimum GPA of 2.0 • FCAT score of 3 or higher • Pre/Co-Requisite • Algebra I (8th or 9th grade) • Biology (ninth grade) • Chemistry (10th grade)

Teacher Certification -Emerging Industry-Combined Academic/CTE credit • District Certification Program – Banner Center • 80 hour (2-week) “Industry Experience” Workshop • Provides industry experience in the context of the HS curriculum, including preparative steps • Master’s Program (Graduate Certificate) • UF CPET’s HHMI funded “Interdisciplinary Center for Ongoing Research/Education” • 12 Credits: 3 credits/2 wk summer program, 3 credits/advanced workshops, 6 credits on-line

Articulation Phase (Year 2) • Obtain “go-ahead” from Articulation Coordinating Committee (ACC) • Mechanism for credit transfer, maximum credits, admission requirements, etc. • AAS, AS, CIP# • Program Admission Requirements • Faculty certification requirements • Establish review cycle for student participation, performance & outcomes • Present to ACC for approval/adoption into statewide articulation manual
