The Marie Stopeshealth clinic controversy By Danielle Dullaghan. Student Number :X00101306
The Marie Stopes health clinic • Offers contraceptive options, HIV testing, STI testing and treatment, ultrasound scanning, and medical abortion up to nine weeks. • The clinic only offers medical abortions under the law of Northern Ireland, this differs from the UK who offer non-medical related abortions • Women who meet the criteria, even women from the Republic Of Ireland can avail of the Clinic.
The Controversy • Religion Vs Morals Vs Women's Rights • The Religious argument : Only god has the right to take away life. • The Moral argument : Killing is wrong in general, regardless of the situation. • The Women's Rights argument : A woman has the right to choose what she does with her body.
The Anti-Clinic support • The “Stop MaireStopes” campaign organised by the precious life group • Over 200 people showed up to protest outside the clinic the day of its opening • Bishop Treanor has said “the opening of the facility in the diocese would further undermine the sanctity and dignity of human life in society”
Currently • The MaireStope Clinic is open • Terminations can only be carried out when the pregnancy would have a serious, permanent or long-term effect on the physical or mental health of the woman. • 4,000 women from the Republic will still go to the UK every year for abortions.
