  1. The Effect of Education on Gender

  2. Boys Subjects • In School, boys and girls tend to do different subjects. • Geography, P.E and D.T are seen as boys subjects. They tend to be more relevant to future employment • Boys tend to do more physical subjects

  3. Girls Subjects • There are large differences in subjects taken. • Home Economics was 15 times more popular with girls than boys. • Twice as many did music • 20 more did Art and Design • 22 more did drama • This shows that girls tend to do more creative subjects.

  4. Teachers This Shows us that women tend to have lower jobs than men. This can cause pupils to believe men are higher than women.

  5. The Role of Education • Functionalists believe that education helps to maintain society by socialising young people. They learn cultural values such as • Opportunity • Skills Provision • Job Allocation • It there for teaches us that men are dominate in this society.

  6. School • Teachers may convey their views on gender by treating different genders in different ways. • Sex Education and Sports are divided into sex groups where girls and boys are taught different things • Trowler studied the English language and discovered its discriminatory medium. E.g ‘Fireman’ and ‘Mankind’

  7. Academic Hierarchy • Highest positions in school are generally held by men. • People are socialised into a set hierarchy from a young age • Stanworth discovered males craved more attention in class so lessons were more aimed at them. • Textbooks were also gender stereotyped. Male characters appear more often and are generally the hero.

  8. Teaching • In the 1980s there was greater emphasis on equality in school. • There is a lot of evidence to suggest that girls work harder and are more motivated than boys • Boys are also more likely to disrupt lessons to gain status from peers. • Evidence also suggest that teachers have a lower expectations for boys.
