  1. New Hampton School College Counseling Presents: Seminar #1: Introduction the College Search and Application Process

  2. Interacting with Adults…as Adults • NHS Mission Respect – Work to your potential; be your best • NHS Mission Responsibility– Evolve, make positive decisions, and contribute

  3. You own your decisions! Your college counselor, advisor, and parents are here to help.

  4. Complex and Multi-Stepped Process • This is a marathon, not a quick sprint. • You need to be a risk-taker, a realist, and a defenseman…simultaneously. If you do, your destiny is somewhat within your control. • It is important to spend your time and emotional energy on that which is within your control. • When you own a decision, it is yours and means more to you than if it belongs to someone else. • An error is not a mistake unless you refuse to correct it. • This is your process, but your parents do have a role.

  5. College is less about where you go and more about what you accomplish while there …your courses, curricular and extra-curricular opportunities, relationships with professors, friendships, community life

  6. Initiative, Ownership, Timeline, & Professionalism Now is your time to practice these skills: • Making and Keeping Meetings • Completing Tasks – forms, requests, phone calls, account management • Independent Research– reflections & notes, questions • Asking for Help & Self-Advocacy–with Parents, College Counselor, Teachers • Respectful Communication & Professionalism– • Body Language–Eye Contact, Attire, Posture • Written Language–Please and thank-you, correct grammar and punctuation, no slang • Spoken Language–Correct (and proper) grammar (ie, “My cousins and I”), no slang
