  2. The Rules of Sumo • The Rules of sumo are simple. The sumo wrestler has to push their opponent out of the ring or off their feet. Simple right?

  3. How Sumo Wrestling Matches Start • Sumo is a Japanese style of wrestling and Japan's national sport. Before the match begins the wrestlers names are called out by the yobisashi. The wrestlers throw purifying salt over the ring and makescary/fearsome poses. The winner is indicated by the referee who points the gunbaiat the winner.

  4. The History of Sumo • Sumo wrestling goes back over 2000 years but it didn’t really become a spectator sport until the early 1600’s. Like most Japanese sports there are strict rules and traditions. Sumo was originally performed to entertain the gods (kami)during the festivals (matsuri). Sumo dates back as far as the Tumulus period (250-552), but it wasn’t until the 17th century it began adopting the intense purification rituals that we see today.
