  2. Brief History • Sports medicine and Athletic Training date back to ancient Rome • The first “athletic trainers” were actually physicians working with gladiators • The most famous was Herodicus of Megara

  3. Brief History • Roman Empire fell and interest in athletics declined • Athletic Training did not emerge again until the early 20th century • Many early athletic trainers were team managers who taped ankles • Most were self taught and are responsible for a lot of techniques

  4. Athletic Training Today • Athletic trainers are not the “jack of all trades” people who founded the profession • Highly trained professionals • Wide variety of skills

  7. What is Sports Medicine? • The term means different things to different groups • Encompasses many specialized areas • Athletic Training is just one of those
