  2. Introduction • Now that all information is stored on computers, there is a need for people to understand how their privacy can be threatened and how they can protect their private information. • Topics to be covered: • Phishing • Spyware • Cookies • Firewalls

Phishing • Definition-A crime that involves trying to obtain private information like passwords and credit card numbers through means like fake websites and emails. • This can be dangerous, so make sure to check the authenticity of websites and emails before sending them sensitive information.

  4. Spyware • Definition-Malware that can collect information about computer users without their knowledge. It can often hinder a computer’s performance. • People can install them without meaning to as spyware is often installed with other programs. • Many anti-virus programs now have anti-spyware features.

  5. Cookies • Definition-Bits of text information about web usage stored on web browsers. • Cookies can be easily deleted and users can also choose not to accept cookies from websites.

  6. Firewalls • Definition-Hardware or software that prevents unauthorized parties from accessing information on a computer or network. • All information and messages entering or leaving the system are checked for security. • Firewalls can prevent people from accessing private networks.

  7. Conclusion • There are many ways that our privacy can be invaded through computers and the Internet. • By understanding these methods, we can better protect ourselves from having private information taken. Methods to obtain sensitive information include phishing and installing spyware and cookies. Ways to protect privacy include anti-virus/anti-spyware programs and firewalls.
