  3. Korean War: Facts • 1950-1953 • Republic of Korea (South) v Democratic Republic of Korea (North) • U.S. backs democratic South Korea • China & USSR back communist North Korea • After WWII, Korea, (formerly owned by Japan) was divided by U.S. & USSR on 38th//.

  4. Causes • Failure to hold free elections in 1948 • Cross-border skirmishes & raids • June 25, 1950: • N. Korea invades S. Korea • 1st significant armed conflict of Cold War

  5. U.S. & U.N intervene • Truman vows not to appease N. Korea • Sends U.S. aid to S. Korea • No formal declaration of war • Soldiers moved from Japan to “occupy” S. Korea • U.N. Security Council votes to support S. Korea • Sends assistance to repel N. Koreans & stop Communist aggression • Sept. 1950-U.N. forces ready for a counterattack.

  6. MacArthur to the Rescue!!! • Lands U.S. Marines at Inchon • Drives N. Koreans back across 38th //

  7. MISTAKES • Pres. Truman wants to fight a “limited war”= a war fought to achieve specific goals • MacArthur favors aggression; wants to invade China

  8. Results • MacArthur disobeys Truman and invades N. Korea • China attacks • Truman fires MacArthur for insubordination • Stalemate ensues until 1953

  9. Lasting Effects • President Eisenhower issues a cease-fire: July 27, 1953 • NO victory declared • 37,000 Americans killed • Relations with China worsen • Relations with Japan improve • Military spending increases
