1. Graphics and Video File Types, Uses and Attributes Please take notes!

2. Picture/Drawing File Types • There are two main ways computers handle and create images. • The first are the bit-mapped file types. • Programs using this type include: • Photoshop • Windows Paint • Painter Classic • Photo Editor

3. File Formats - Bit Mapped • .jpg • .tif • .bmp • .png • .raw • .gif • And many others

4. Bit-Mapped • Bit mapped images tend to be large files. • Many types are not good for use on the Internet because of their size. • Compression can be used to reduce the file size of the image. • Examples: .tiff , jpg, gif • Some compression schemes lose noticeable amounts of quality.

5. Vector-Based Graphics • Vector-based graphics are based upon mathematical formulas. • These scale very well. • Some printers such as post-script printers use vector-based images to create fonts. • CAD programs are vector-based. • Vector-Based images do well with line drawings, but do poorly with photo-realistic images

6. Vector-Based Programs • All CAD Programs • Freehand • Adobe Illustrator • Corel Draw • Appleworks Draw • Google SketchUp

7. Vector-Based File Types • .eps • .swf • .ai • .cdr • .dwg

8. Some Graphic File Types • .bmp • Huge file size. Image broken down into pixels. Used for wallpaper, etc. in Windows • .tif • High quality – large file size, even when compressed. Used for printing.

9. Graphics files • .jpg • Used for the Internet. Heavily compressed. Looks okay on-screen. Not so good for printing. • .gif • Used for the Internet. Very heavily compressed. Limited color depth. Can support transparent color and limited animation.

10. Graphics files • When you compress a file and overwrite it you lose detail that cannot be restored. • A 5kb .jpg balloons to 250kb when saved as a bit map with no increase in image quality.

11. Graphics Files • Always keep in mind your end use when selecting a file type. • Use graphics programs to translate from one file-type to another by doing a “Save As”.

12. Video files • Video files by their nature are rather large. • .avi offers best quality • At full resolution count on 1.5 gig/minute • Files can be compressed into one of several file types. Each has its own advantages/disadvantages

13. Video Files • Major file types • .avi • .mpg (mp1, mp2, mp3, mp4) • .wma • .divix • HCL (HD file type from Sony) • HDV • Quicktime

14. Video Files • Streaming vs. Downloadable • Streaming can be viewed but cannot be saved without special software. • Downloadable files take a great deal of time to copy. • .wma file types support both.

15. Streaming Video files • Realplayer files are strictly streaming. • Windows Media Player files can be either. It comes in both flavors. • Flash and Shockwave are strictly streaming.

16. Non-Streaming Video Files • These copy to your hard drive before playing: • .avi – Used for full-resolution applications such as editing. Can be used in PowerPoint. • .mpg – Used for compressed video. Has many variations. Can be edited but it is not recommended. • .wma – Windows Media Player. Can be used in PowerPoint. Offers different compression levels.

17. Video Files • DIVIX • Often used for movies • Files highly compressed • Students like these files • Player software used to be free and widely available. Now most charge. • Runs on Laptops and portable devices

18. Video Files • .VOB – Used for DVD’s - Video object file. • Special players can be used to play this file type such as WinDVD. • These files can also be edited.

19. High Definition Video • There are video formats that were created specifically for HD. • HCL • HDV • Others have been adapted for HD • AVI • MP4/Quicktime

20. High Definition Video • Special software may be needed to reduce HD footage to SD. • Some editing software may reduce the image quality to fit on a standard DVD disc, but the format remains in HD. • This may cause compatability issues. • HD DVD’s are Blu-Ray.
