The Balm In Gilead • The Balm In Gilead is a not-for-profit, not governmental organization whose mission is to improve the health status of people of the African Diaspora by building the capacity of faith communities to address life-threatening diseases, especially HIV/AIDS.

Outcomes • Highlights a neighborhood’s assets • Analyzes changes in the neighborhood • Identifies strengths, supports, and opportunities • Identifies gaps

Approach • Earn the right to speak and recommend • Active Listener • Do your homework • Clear agenda, but a open-minded • Know yourself • Nonjudgmental • Promote Your Credibility
The Individual • Who is the person • Honor their personhood (not a number, outcome, high-risk group) • Temperament (ex. DISC) • Task -oriented : too friendly is annoying • People-oriented: Not friendly enough is a turn off • What are their interests • Listen: Can a brown paper bag talk to you?
Your message • Listen and be curious • Clarity • Denominations (30 sec, 60 sec, 1 min, 8 hrs) • You are the message • Body Language • Consistency
