  6. Evaluate the websites you find. Is the page sponsored by a college, university, or professional association? Is the author an expert? Does the author use real, checkable facts to support his or her points? If no author can be determined, or the author has no credentials that make him an expert, PASS! If there are spelling or grammar mistakes, PASS! If a controversial issue is involved, strong language toward opposing viewpoints is used OR is biased toward only one side of the issue, PASS! Credibility on the Internet

Good: Dates show when information was published or updated (check page bottom) Layout is simple and easy to follow Home page URL (ends in .edu, .org, .gov) Not-so-good: Broken links and/or error messages Site not complete or never finished (“under construction”) Advertisements or other distractions Bright colors, tacky designs Good Web sites

  10. Introductions: Attention-getting Device • Ask a question • Make a startling statement • Give a quote • Give a definition • Use a short anecdote

  11. Formal Writing • Write in the third person (no I, we, you, or your) • No contractions • Formal wording: no colloquial language • Concrete language

  13. Editing Check List • Eliminate “There are, is, was, were, will be” • Cut down on BE verbs (5 allowed) • Do not begin each sentence with the subject • Do not say things like “In this paper I will…” • Do not end a sentence with a preposition

Do not use any form of you • Be careful of words like there, they’re, and its,it’s • Eliminate alot and a lot completely • Use a thesaurus (but be careful to look up words you use and use them correctly) • Use a dictionary (or run spell check) • Avoid absolute statements (People can easily argue with them, weakening your point) • Avoid beginning sentences with it or with connectives. • PROOFREAD CAREFULLY / USE PEER EDITORS!

  15. Editing Questions • Attention getter? Place in brackets. • Thesis statement? Underline. Double underline words that suggest your topic. • Topic sentences? Place an A by the main point. Put a lower case a over supporting statements. • Definite conclusion? Place a wavy line under the concluding sentence.

Revising the Research Paper • Does the opening grab the reader’s attention? • Does the thesis statement identify the topic and main idea? • Is each main point supported with relevant information: summaries, paraphrases, or quotations? • Is proper credit given for each source of information (parenthetical citations)? • Does the conclusion restate the paper’s thesis?
