Explorers were people who… • Searched or traveled for the purpose of discovery of resources or information • mainly came from England, Portugal, Italy, France, and Spain • traveled to the New World in search of many different things An expedition is a long journey or voyage for a specific purpose, like exploring

  3. Why would they go on an Expedition? • Wealth - gold, silver and spices • Increased Power in Europe • Prestige (get to be famous for the being the first one there) • Increasing opportunities for trade • Spreading the Christian Religion • Building European Empire

  4. Spanish Explorers • Conquistadors – Spanish soldiers, explorers and adventurers • Spain wanted a lot of things! • Knowledge of the world • Larger empire • Find spices and other riches • Expand Christianity • Gold and Siver!

Juan Ponce de Leon (1460-1521) • Was the first European to explore Florida • Searching for the Fountain of Youth (believed to be in Bimini) • Landed in St. Augustine (first city in the United States) • He named it Florida because he saw lots of flowers. • In Spanish, Florida means flowery • 2nd trip to Florida, he got hit by an arrow • Died in July 1521 from his injury

Hernando De Soto (1500-1541) • Led the first expedition across the southeastern United States • Was searching for hidden cities that contained lots of gold and silver • Helped Pizzaro with his conquest of the Inca Empire • King appointed him governor of Cuba for his help • Traveled to Florida in May of 1539 • Discovered the Mississippi River and Appalachian Mountains • Died May 21, 1542 without ever finding treasure

Panfilo de Narvaez (1478-1528) • Lead two expeditions, Mexico in 1520 and Florida in 1527 • Was named adelantado (governor) of Florida • Landed in Florida with 300 men among hostile natives in an attempt to colonize Florida. • After a hurricane, hostile natives, sunken ships, and starvation only five men survived (Narvaez wasn’t one of them)

  10. Instructions from the King and Queen You, as an agent for the King and Queen, are hereby authorized to make a journey to the New World on behalf of our kingdom. All of our rivals are competing for land, trade and wealth. Whoever wins will be the strongest kingdom in Europe. It is imperative that you succeed. Your mission is to claim all land for the monarchy, locate a new trading route across the ocean, look for the Northwest Passage, and bring back gold, silver, metals, spices, new plants, and any items deemed valuable. You will be provided with a ship, crew, and all the necessary provisions for an extensive journey to the New World. Certain precise requirements must be met if you expect to be rewarded for your achievements. In order to fulfill your contract you will make an Explorer's Notebook consisting of the attached items.
