This was a ‘lynching’. These were common occurrences in Southern USA during the Twentieth Century.
Black people were also subjected to things such as : • Beatings. • Tarring and Feathering. • Kidnappings. • Floggings. • Orders to leave town. • Murders. • Mutilations. • …and one person was branded with acid, with the ‘N’.
So what are today’s aims: • To gain an ‘OVERVIEW’ (or a ‘BIG PICTURE UNDERSTANDING’) of Black American’s history. • To complete a ‘timeline teaser’ some of the main events.
In this topic you are going to learn about: • The African civilisations. • What it means to be a slave. • What life was like as a slave. • The reasons for slavery. • How slaves won their freedom. • The Civil rights movement.
When Black people first came to the USA, they were captured and treated like this… Who have the slaves been captured by? Why do you think this is?
