  1. Transition Keynsham Frack Free Somerset CoalbedMethane (CBM) Extraction Our concerns

  2. The Situation – The Energy Crisis Global Energy Consumption is rising at an ever increasing rate...

  3. Worldwide Oil & Gas reserves are peaking • It will take more energy to extract than is returned in energy • Soon demand will outweigh supply • The UK is facing an energy shortage – It’s CRUNCH time!

  4. Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) Deep Water Drilling Nuclear Power Mountain Top Removal

  5. PEDL Licences (Petroleum Exploration Development Licences) Keynsham * * * *UK Methane & Eden Energy

  6. Underground Coal Gasification Setting fire to coal while it is still in the ground

  7. Schematic Geology of Conventional & Unconventional Gas Resources * ** *Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) & **Coalbed Methane (CBM)

  8. Coalbed Methane Extraction process

  9. What happens to the ‘Produced Water’?

  10. CBM can progress to Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking) To force out the last of the methane gas

  11. Spread of Industrial Landscape across Somerset Chinchilla, Queensland

  12. Eden Energy’s publicised Gas Assets in Bristol/Somerset area could equate to 2000+ Wells Based on amounts of CBM being extracted from ‘Dart Energy’s wells in Falkirk, Scotland Wells every 3 miles Connected by a network of pipelines

  13. Disturbance for our community CBM extraction is a 24/7 Process • In Keynsham there will be • Increased Heavy Vehicle Traffic • Noise • Loss of Greenbelt / Agricultural land • It is also possible that there will be • Spillages and Leaks leading to groundwater contamination • Vibrations • Damage to other industries; farming, agriculture & tourism • Affects on house & property values • If CBM spreads across Somerset we risk • Sites and Enclosures • New access Roads • Leading to the division of the countryside and disruption of Wildlife Corridors

  14. Unconventional Gas Resources in UK Estimate Recoverable Resources (2011) Q. CBM and Shale Gas - will they keep the lights on? A. NOT FOR LONG!! (UK gas consumption is around 100 bcm per year)

  15. And what about Climate Change - and our Carbon Reduction Targets?
