  3. Some Defined elements Others define the Authorized database protocols that APs and Fixed devices shall use, and each AP is certified to operate with a specific Authorized TV bands database. A Registered Location Secure Server accesses the Authorized databases with protocols that others define, and may provide a persistent internet address to the databases. APs and 802.11 stations access a Registered Location Secure Server with radio protocols that IEEE 802.11 defines. Peter Ecclesine, Cisco

  6. OFCOM, ECC Report 159 White Space Devices (WSDs) • White space devices (WSDs) are devices that can use White Space spectrum without causing harmful interference to protected services by employing required cognitive capabilities. Peter Ecclesine, Cisco

OFCOM, ECC Report 159 master WSD • Master white space device is a device which consults a white-space database in order to obtain a list of available TV channels at the device’s location, and the corresponding maximum permitted WSD EIRP in each available channel. • A master WSD has • Ability to consult a website listing of approved databases at a certain minimum periodicity (24 hours). • Ability to determine its own geographic location. • Ability to communicate (at least) the following parameters to a WSDB: a) location, b) location accuracy, c) height above ground (if fixed WSD mounted on a mast), d) model ID, and e) adjacent-channel leakage ratios2 (ACLRs). • Ability to receive and interpret (at least) the following parameters from a WSDB: a) frequencies of available channels, b) maximum permitted EIRPs for each available channel, c) time- and geographic-validity of the parameters, d) instructions as to whether sensing is additionally required. • Ability to operate in accordance with parameters communicated by a WSDB. • Ability to operate in a “fair” manner (in the context of co-existence with other WSDs). • Ability to manage slave WSDs as required. OFCOM, ECC Report 159 slave WSD • Slave white space device is a device which does notdirectly communicate with a white-space database, but is under the control of a master WSD. • A slave WSD has • Ability to communicate (at least) the following parameters to a master WSD: a) adjacent-channel leakage ratios2 (ACLRs). • Ability to receive and interpret instructions from a master device indicating which channels are available for use, and the maximum permitted EIRP for each available channel. • Ability to operate in accordance with parameters communicated by a master WSD, and to immediately cease all emissions when instructed by a master WSD or within 5 seconds of not receiving a response from a master WSD. IEEE 802.11af terms • GDC dependent STA: A STA that is under the control of Geo-location Database Controlled enabling STA. • GDC enabling STA: A STA that has the authority to control the operation of GDC dependent STAs after obtaining available spectrum for use at its own location.   11. IEEE 802.11af terms (2) • fixed station (STA): A STA that is physically attached to a specific location. In licensed bands, a fixed STA might be authorized to operate only at a specific location. • contact verification signal (11af D1.04): The Contact Verification Signal is transmitted by a GDC enabling STA in order to both establish that the GDC dependent STAs are within the reception range of the GDC enabling STA, and to validate the available channel list.
