Comparative with Adjs and Nouns • 3 key words: plus- more,, aussi- also, the same as, moins- less • Can use expressions with adjs to compare things and people • Adj MUST agree with noun in gender and number • With “C’est”, NO agreement Plus + adj + que = more….than aussi + adj +que= as…as moins + adj + que= less…than

  3. Examples • La villeestplusbruyanteque la campagne. • La villeestaussiintéressantequela campagne. • La campagneestmoinspolluéeque la ville.

  4. You can also compare nouns using plus de, moins de, and autant de before the noun. • Remember to use que/ qu’ to continue the comparison Ex. Il y a plus de vachesquede canards. Elle a moinsde chevauxquesesgrands-parents.

  5. The superlative with adjs • Superlative means the best or worst of a category • To say the least or the most, use the following structure: * Remember adj agreement, articles Le La plus/ moins + adj + de Les L’ Ex. C’est la villelaplusintéressantede la région.

  6. Notice, structure changes depending on whether adj goes before or after verb Ex. C’estleplusjoli village de la région. C’est le village leplusproprede la région. Non, c’estmoi le meilleur, le plus fort, le plus grand, le plus intelligent!

  7. Irregular Comparatives and Superlatives • Comparative and superlative forms of bon and mauvais = irregular Good -> better -> best Bon(ne)(s)meilleur(e)(s)le (la, les) meilleur(e)(s) bad -> worse -> the worst Mauvais(e)(s)pire(s)le (la, les) pire(s)

Oui, la campagneestla meilleure! • Notice- it’s common to use moins bon rather than pire Ex. Et moi, je trouveque la vie à la campagneestpire/ moins bonne que la vie en ville. • Meilleur(e)(s) and pire(s) go before the noun Ex. L’étéquej’ai passé chez mesgrands-parents étaitle meilleur(le pire) été de ma vie.
