  2. Problem : Find the % composition of the formula MgCl2 • Step 1: Separate the atoms vertically and write the total of each in front of the symbol. (1) Mg (2) Cl • Step 2: Look up the masses of each atom in the periodic table and multiply by the number of each.

  3. Look up the atomic masses in the periodic table. • Mass of Mg is 24 g/mole • Mass of Chlorine is 35 g/mole

  4. Problem : Find the % composition of the formula MgCl2 • Step 1: Separate the atoms vertically and write the total of each in front of the symbol. (1) Mg (2) Cl • Step 2: Look up the masses of each atom in the periodic table and multiply by the number of each. • (1) Mg = 24 g/mole • (2) Cl = 2(35 g/mole) = 70 g/mole

(1) Mg (2) Cl • Step 2: Look up the masses of each atom in the periodic table and multiply by the number of each. • (1) Mg = 24 g/mole • (2) Cl = 2(35 g/mole) = 70 g/mole • Step 3: Add the masses to get the total • (1) Mg = 24 g/mole • (2) Cl = 70 g/mole 94 g/mole

  6. Problem : Find the % composition of the formula MgCl2 • Step 4: Now divide the mass of each of the atoms by the total mass of the compound. • % Mg : • % Cl: • Step 5: Multiply your decimals x 100 and get the percent • Mg: 0.255 x 100 = 25% • Cl : 0.745 x 100 = 75%
