  2. Intro to India • India is in southern Asia • Its bordering countries are Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, and Bangladesh. • Its topography landscape is Dessert, Urban, and glaciers.

  3. India Government • India is a republic. • Their government is often referred to as the union government. • India has 28 states and 7 union territories

  4. India Facts and Culture • The Official Language of India is Hindi, Bengalini, and Telugu. • The population of it is 1 . 12 billion people. • Its About the Size of 1/3 of the US • currency of India is the rupee

  5. History ~ 5000 years ago civilization has been a rich and complicated mix of people and religions. ~ 326 Alexander the great invaded India. ~ India gains freedom, and Jawaharlal Nehru is sworn in as the prime minister of independence hall.

  6. Sitar • A guitar like instrument with 13 strings. • the modern sitar first appeared in the 1700s • You play it by plucking the strings with your dominant hand and working the frets with your other. Played sitting down. Sound clip. Video

  7. Tabla Drums • One small and One big drum • Indian poet Amir Khusrau invented the instrument, by splitting a Pakhawaj into two parts. It is a religious folk instrument • Played by hitting hands on the top of the drum Video

  8. Veena • Looks like the sitar but has a support on the neck. • Developed in 1600’s in southern India • Played just like a Sitar

  9. Mrdangam • A two headed instrument that is hollowed out. Made out of jackwood • Played by hitting both sides of the drum Videos, Sound clip, pictures

  10. Rebab • Looks almost like a banjo. Made out of wood and synthetic strings. • Comes from a Pakistan instrument • It is part of the lute family
