  1. Naming Ionic and Covalent

  2. Naming Covalent Bonds • Element in “leftmost” column goes 1st • **if elements are in the same column, then the lower atomic # goes 1st • The 2nd element ends in –ide • Greek prefixes are used to show the number of each element

  3. Covalent Bonding ** SEE PAGE 33 Exception: Mono- is dropped on the 1st element (if there is just one of them!!!)

  4. Practice: Name the following CCl4 P2O5 CO SO2

  5. Practice CCl4 = carbon tetrachloride P2O5 = diphosphorouspentoxide CO = carbon monoxide SO2 = sulfur dioxide

  6. Naming Ionic Bonds • There are no Greek prefixes • Write the name of the metal as it is shown on the periodic table • Write the name of the nonmetal with –ide at the end • Practice • Li2S • Ag2S • MgCl2

  7. Answers • Li2S = Lithium sulfide • Ag2S = Silver sulfide • MgCl2 = Magnesium chloride

  8. Try Some- Covalent • Draw the molecule and then write the name of the following • CH4 • C2H6 • H2O • CO2 • C4H10
