  2. “An Assessment and Analysis of the Warm Season Diurnal Cycle over the Continental United States and Northern Mexico in Global Atmospheric General Circulation Models” Goals: assess and analyze the diurnal cycle in the NASA, NCEP and GFDL AGCMs 2) improve our understanding of the important physical processes that drive the diurnal cycle 3) provide guidance for development of physical parameterizations

People • CoIs: Siegfried Schubert, Isaac Held, Arun Kumar, Max Suarez • Key people: Myong-In Lee, Hyun-Kyung Kim, Jeff Ploshay, Gabriel Lau • Participants: Kingtse Mo, Jae Schemm, Wayne Higgins, Baijun Tian, Phil Pegion, Julio Bacmeister, David Gutzler, and Guang Zhang (UCSD - related OGP proposal looking at NCAR CAM2)

Experiments • Initial set of “production” resolution runs a) Approximately 2 degrees (lat/lon) b) May-September c) climatological SST d) 5 ensemble members -different ICs e) at least one with very extensive output • 2) Produce 3 additional sets of seasonal simulations • (approx. 1 deg, 1/2 deg and 1/4 deg). Next steps -Clarify link between CAPE and precipitation (entrainment, inhibition, contribution from large-scale, implementation details) -Some experimentation with convection schemes - implementation issues -Carry out and analyze high resolution runs -Focus on NAME region utilizing NAME observations -Analyze link between boundary layer and convection schemes
