  1. In The Footsteps Of The Master:The Life and Times of Jesus Christ Jesus Predicts His Death & Resurrection December 18, 2011 www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  2. Jesus Continues to Jerusalem • Mark 10:32 • 32They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him ... • Why were the disciples amazed? • Why were they fearful? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  3. A Pilgrimage • Jesus and the disciples are headed “up” to Jerusalem • They’ve been headed in that direction for quite some time • There would have been a pilgrimage in process, since the group is headed to Jerusalem for Passover • One would expect a large number of Galilean Jews to also be making their way to one of the three major Jewish feasts www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  4. Jesus’ Journey www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  5. Jesus Speaks Plainly • Mark 10:33-34 • 33saying,“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.” • This is Jesus’ third prediction of His death www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  6. First Prediction • Mark 8:31-33 • 31And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  7. Second Prediction • Mark 9:30-32 • 30From there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know about it. 31For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.” 32But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him. • Why would they be afraid to ask? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  8. For Discussion • Jesus has spoken more and more plainly about what is to come, but the disciples have been slow on the uptake • Why do they have trouble grasping what Jesus is telling them? • In this narrative, Jesus is very plain about what will take place • He tells them specific details about what is to come www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  9. Jesus Speaks Plainly • Mark 10:33-34 • 33saying,“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  10. For Discussion • Jesus points out that He ... • Will be delivered to the chief priests • Will be handed over to the Gentiles • Signifies complete rejection of the Messiah • Only the Gentiles (Romans) could execute Jesus • Will be mocked, scourged and killed • Will rise three days later www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  11. OT Prophecies • Psalm 22:6-8 • 6But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. 7All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying,8“Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  12. OT Prophecies • Isaiah 50:6-7 • 6I gave My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting. 7For the Lord GOD helps Me, Therefore, I am not disgraced; Therefore, I have set My face like flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed. • The Servant knows that he is in the hands of God www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  13. For Discussion • Jesus is headed to Jerusalem to fulfill His destiny • Spelled out by the Prophets over the years • In the disciples’ defense, how could they fathom that someone who heals the sick and the lame, raises the dead and walks on water is going to be killed by the people of Jerusalem? • If He is God in the flesh, how could they kill him? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  14. An Odd Request • Mark 10:35-37 • 35James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” 36And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37They said to Him, “Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” • Why would they ask such a thing? • Do these disciples have any idea what they are asking for? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  15. Are You Able? • Mark 10:38-39a • 38But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39They said to Him, “We are able.” • Do they have any notion of what Jesus is telling them? • What is the cup and the baptism that Jesus must face? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  16. The Cup I Drink • Mark 10:39b • 39bAnd Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” • What is Jesus telling the disciples? • What will they face? • Who determines who sits where in the Kingdom? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  17. The Other Ten • Mark 10:41-44 • 41Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John. 42Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them. 43But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  18. For Discussion • Does the reaction of the other ten tell you anything about what James and John were asking? • Jesus reiterates the concept of status reversal as a condition for entrance into the Kingdom • Those who seek to be first will be last www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  19. Jesus’ Purpose • Mark 10:45 • “45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” • Jesus sole purpose in coming was to serve and pay the ransom • The fact that the Creator of the Universe came to earth for the sole purpose of saving His creation should radically change us www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  20. Psalm 22 • Psalm 22:19-24 • 19But You, O LORD, be not far off; O You my help, hasten to my assistance. 20Deliver my soul from the sword, My only life from the power of the dog. 21Save me from the lion’s mouth; From the horns of the wild oxen You answer me. 22I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. 23You who fear the LORD, praise Him; All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel. 24For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  21. Psalm 22 • Psalm 22:25-31 • 25From You comes my praise in the great assembly; I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him. 26The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever! 27All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations will worship before You. 28For the kingdom is the LORD’S And He rules over the nations. 29All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship, All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep his soul alive. 30Posterity will serve Him; It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. 31They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
