  5. News GCSE grades • Students will take exams for the new GCSEs, graded 9-1 for all subjects in 2019: What are the implications?

New GCSE Grades explained • The new mid-grade (5) will be 50 per cent more demanding than the current grade C and will be treated as the new grade C. • Ofqual explains: “Grade 5 will be positioned in the top third of the marks for a current grade C and bottom third of the marks for a current grade B. This will mean it will be of greater demand than the present grade C.

Year 11 MathematicsTeachers: Mr Zamblera, Mrs Rushanthan, Mr Scott, Mr Weeks, Mrs Bridgman, Mrs James Students will sit 3 exams:  EXAM BOARD – Edexcel GCSE 1-9 • Paper 1 – non calculator 1hr 30 mins – 24th May 2018 • Paper 2 and Paper 3- Both Calculators (calculators required in lessons) 1hr 30 mins each 7th & 12th June 2018 Lessons and assessment Lessons are aimed at ability, introduced to what grade (1-9)they are working at. Short assessments at the end of the topics using exam styled Questions. PLC( personalised check lists) are used to track individual gaps. After school Revision – Term 1 by invite only ( will change) 3.05- 4.05 pm Revision Guides and scientific calculators are available through SCOPAY • Higher workbook £6 , Higher Revision Guide £6 – set 1, set 2, set 3 • Foundation workbook £6, Foundation Revision Guide £6-set 4, set5

English Literature Examination Dates: • English Literature: 8702/1 Shakespeare and the 19th Century novel (Romeo and Juliet and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) 15th May (am). • 8702/2 Modern texts and poetry (An Inspector Calls, Power and Conflict Poetry and Unseen Poetry)23rd May (am). • Homework is interleaved, meaning students might be doing homework on a different text to the one they’re studying in class. There’s a lot to remember, so we mix it up to keep everything fresh in their minds. • Revision guides currently available as a pack from Scopay for the next 2 weeks. English Language Examination Dates: • English Language: 8700/1 Explorations in creative reading and writing 4th June (am). • 8700/2 Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives 7th June (am). • Non-exam assessment in Spoken Language submit to AQA by 7th May 2018 (will be recorded in Term 3) • We are currently studying Literature in class, so students should be accessing the Wrotham School revision website or Mr Bruff / Stacy Raey on youtube to support revision of this qualification. • Homework is through knowledge organisers set for homework – students should be printing these off and using them to revise for tests How can I help? Test spellings of Tier 2 and 3 language Use the Wrotham website for resources Encourage reading fiction and non-fiction to develop vocab Encourage stretch and challenge homework

Year 11 Combined ScienceTeachers: Mrs Zdzylowski, Mrs Paul, Mr Fenniche, Mr Elcome and Mrs Parry • Students will sit 6 exams:  • Biology 1, Chemistry 1, Physics 1 – May 2018 • Biology 2, Chemistry 2, Physics 2 – June 2018 • One hour 15 minutes each • Revision Guides are available through school £3.50 each • Get them now and start revising units we have already completed • We will start setting knowledge tests and exam question practicefor homework now! • After school revision – Wednesdays by invitation this term, but other students welcome to ‘drop-in’ for support. • After Christmas, all students welcome to all sessions.

  16. My Child’s got 95% attendance record – that seems pretty good to me! • 95% attendance = Half a day of lessons missed every two weeks. • 95% attendance = two weeks of lessons missed each year This is equivalent of almost a whole years lessons for one GCSE subject.

  17. I Hate this subject/teacher • Teenagers are prone to all or nothing thinking. • Try to find out what your child is objecting to in class. • For teenagers problems often seem permanent. • Your temptation might be to ‘protect’ your child. Try to listen to the other side of the story.

Excuses • My works on the computer at school. • We didn’t get homework because there was a supply teacher. • I’m doing that homework with a friend and she has got the book. • It doesn’t have to be in for ages. • I have to be at school to do this homework. • Mr X never gives us homework. • Keep track of the excuses • Suggest a solution – They bring it home tomorrow to do. • Follow up without fail. • Last resort – tell them you are contacting the school. • Remember the aim is not to win the battle. Let your child save face.

  20. Parents • Please do not encourage students focusing on a few subjects. • Attend all parents evening appointments. • Support your child to maintain good relationships with teachers. Let teachers solve any situations at school. • Be careful not to express your feelings about teachers to your child. • Do not restrict pupils progress by assumptions you have made about your child's ability. • Teachers will never give a pupil false hope. We are always realistic in what a pupil can achieve. • Pupils need to do well in all subjects now, not just Maths and English. Grade 5 will be the future bench mark.

Tips for parents • Build good relationships with teachers • Make sure you know the name of the person in charge of your child's progress. • Help your child to organise a work area. • Talk about your own and your child's expectations of the amount of revision. Negotiate terms! • Make sure the ‘workbox’ is kept well stocked. • Put key dates in your diary so you can help before the ‘panic stage’. • If your child seems to be getting no homework check in with the school. • Have you bought all of the revision guides • Test your child on key vocab

Strategies/Tick list • Check your child is working daily and revising weekly – even if they say they have no homework – they have! • Provide them with an area to study • Look at your child’s subject exercise books • Ensure your child attends lunch and after school sessions • Send them into school daily • Liaise with your child’s teachers via phone and e mail
