The Humanitarian Context/ Global trend • Widening disparity between poor and rich • Internal Conflicts (religious, ethnic, economic, political disputes) • Rural to Urban Migration – population explosion • Food insecurity • Health – HIV/AIDs and other life threatening illnesses (TB, Malaria, Ebola, SARs. • HIV/AIDS eliminating human capita faster than it is creating it in Africa • Environmental – climate changes. • More players • Donor demands and increased accountability Filename/RPS Number

Impact on Global HR • Reactive vis a vis proactive • Need to provide staff to support programs during all types of emergencies ie Rapid Onset vs slow onset • Sourcing and deployment of staff with skills to meet the increasing complex emergencies i.e Tsunami, Floods, HIV/AIDs. Traditional versus non traditional skills • Understanding the local context (legal context, policies,local labour market, demographics) • Resources – preparedness/capacity building • Staff Security • Increased need for psychosocial support systems and critical incident stress management • Ensuring effective HR Standards eg (People In Aid, Emergency Capacity building Research, World Vision HR Standards,Do no Harm etc ) Filename/RPS Number
