  2. Welcome and Introductions • Exchange Organisers and Chaperones • Ms. Abra & Mr. Thickett • Introducing SEVEC • Society for Educational Visits & Exchanges in Canada • Winnipeg & Churchill High School

  3. Dates • We go to Winnipeg • Sunday May 2nd – Sunday May 9th • We host • Saturday May 15th – Saturday May 22nd(this does run into the long weekend)

  4. Costs • SEVEC pays for all travel costs • Air Fares, transfers, (travel insurance?) • Organisation of travel & help with all other aspects of the exchange • You pay $300-400 • Cost depends upon number of students • Covers supply costs, day excursions in Ottawa and organisational costs • Students will need a little spending money

  5. Payments • $100 deposit due upon acceptance • Remainder due end of March • A payment schedule will be worked out with the participating parents • Once a student’s name has been submitted to SEVEC the $100 deposit is non-refundable • Once the plane tickets are booked by SEVEC, students are liable for the $800 (approximate) cost if they pull out

  6. Pairings • Students will be paired based on the information provided on the application form • Same sex pairings • Attention paid to allergies • Attention paid to smoking & pets • Similar likes and dislikes • Students will make contact with their partner via e-mail, etc. and get to know them before the exchange starts

  7. Billeting • Hosts reference checked • Billets need their own beds with some privacy • Sharing a room is okay • Camp beds, etc. in the family room is not okay • Billets are guests but should be treated as part of the family • Your house – you set the rules (reasonably) • Problems rarely occur, but will be sorted out immediately via an organisers visit

  8. Supervision in Winnipeg • Organisers will be with students at all times during travel times • Organisers will be with students during day trips and scheduled trips • Host parents will supervise students during evenings & weekends • Organisers will be on-call at all times in case of emergencies – school cell phone • Organisers will regularly check-in with students and deal with problems as needed

  9. Exchange in Winnipeg • Documentation • Travel insurance provided • Health cards needed • Type of Identification needed t.b.c. • Travel organised and paid for by SEVEC • Flights from Ottawa to Winnipeg + transfers • Excursions in Winnipeg to be arranged and paid for by Churchill H.S.

  10. Exchange in Ottawa • Students will be involved in planning the activities • We organise and pay for all day activities in Ottawa • Parliament + meet our MP • Museums • Rideau hall + other sites • Gatineau Park + other outdoor activities • Additional activities can be arranged for evenings and weekends

  11. Educational Aspect – SEVEC Requirement • Students involved in the organisation • Students complete writing assignments • Letters to partner, SEVEC, MP, etc. • Newspaper/website article • Portfolio Project: My Winnipeg experience • Written journal/Photo journal • Poster presentation • Blog • Mixed Portfolio

  12. Next Steps • Application Form • 4 pages – information sheet + written responses • Due Friday, November 6th by 3pm • Hand to Ms. Abra, Mr. Thickett, Main Office • Selection Process • Teacher references • Balance with Churchill H.S. • Successful candidates notified within 10 days
