  3. Internal Processing: Where does a grant application start? Researcher develops a theory that requires more research How will this research be funded?

  4. Internal Processing: Pre-Review Processing Investigator • Identify a sponsor and the opportunity for which he/she will apply. • Complete and deliver UAB Extramural Checklist to OGCA • Enters the UAB Checklist and application data and sends the PI an email confirming receipt. OGCA

Internal Processing: Pre-Review Processing • The Principal Investigator(s) must have an eRA Commons user name. • Subcontractors: What is required? • Statement of Intent or Letter of Support stating their intent • Budget: Subaward R &R or PHS 398 Budget Forms 4 and 5* • Checklist or Rate Agreement • Current Bio-Sketch(s) for key personnel • UAB Extramural Checklist Review: *Paper & electronic applications in which UAB uses a modular budget requires the subcontractor to submit PHS 398 Forms 4 & 5.

  6. Internal Processing: Application Review • Application Submission Types: • Paper – Mechanisms P, G12,M01, R10/U10, R24/U24, S06, U01, U19, and U45 are still paper. They are send to NIH via mail. • Electronic – All other submission types are electronic and are sent via Grants.gov. • Read: Application Instructions & Opportunity Announcement • Review the application to make sure that the application and opportunity announcement requirements are met. • Upload your “draft” application to the OGCA Dropbox seven (7) days prior to the submission deadline.

  7. Internal Processing: Application Review 5. OGCA Officer will review the “draft” application and submit necessary corrections to the principal investigator or administrator. • Upload your “final” application to the OGCA Dropbox three (3) days prior to the submission deadline. • The OGCA Officer will submit the final application to NIH via Grants.gov and eRA Commons systems. NOTE:The AOR/institutions is expected to enforce that application changes made within the error correction window are restricted to those necessary to address system identified errors/warnings.  NIH may reject any application that includes additional changes.
