  1. International System of Units SI Units

  2. CA Standard: 4e and 11l • Students know how to… • convert between °C - °K • Analyze situations/solve problems combining and applying concepts.

  3. SI Units • In science we use measurements to observe. • Thus we need to assign the correct units in the numerical value to know what we are talking about.

  4. SI Units • Most commonly used Units by chemists • Length – meter (m) • Mass – kilogram (Kg) • Temp. – Kelvin (K) • Time – second (sec) • Amount of a substance- mole (mol) • Volume – cubic centimeter (cm3)

  5. K H D M D C M

  6. Volume • The space occupied by any sample of matter. • Liter (L) is most commonly used measurement. • Not part of the SI Unit • Volume = length x width x height

  7. Mass • The measurement of the quantity of matter • Weight is different. • A force that measures the pull on a given mass by gravity. • Kg = mass of 1 L of liquid water at 4° C.

  8. Temperature • Measured in Kelvin. • Comparison of Kevin to Celsius scales.
