  1. Nonfiction:What’s Real Nonfiction is all about what is or has really happened in the world. Nonfiction writing can take many forms. Let’s look into a few…

  2. The Tiananmen Square Massacre

  3. So, what happened? • It was 1989 • Millions of people gathered at Tiananmen Square to protest the Communist regime • The Chinese army surrounded, then attacked BELOW: Protestors fight back.

  4. No one knows exactly how many lives were lost (due to possible government cover-ups) • It is said that bodies were piled in the middle of the square in piles as tall as buildings as a warning to future protestors

  5. Lone hero? • Much nonfiction has been written about this man: This image shows him standing in front of the tanks, keeping them out of the square. At this point, the worldwide news media had its cameras pointed on the tanks entering the square. This video was taken: (Insert video clip)

  6. “Arrested in Shanghai” by Rancid • Yeah? They were sure I was guilty, but I committed no crimeThey said: confessions bring lenience, so that put me on the lineSo I protest the massacres at the Tiananmen SquareMy friends say Yo, stay away man, you better not go messing back thereOh. • Watch this:One night I might write about my opinions about the stateAnd the freedom of expression they would never tolerateAnd the military secrets that I never did stealI didn’t start no violence, no, and there was nobody that I killedNo. • So I had a clear account of all abusers of powerAnd the memories of homeland now gone sourAnd I only got one weapon, it’s so plain for me to seeMy only weapon, I call poetryAnd I don’t even know whyThe truth seems like a lieIn my cell there is no skyWhen I was arrested in Shanghai

  7. Now, in a world of privilege I was not born But, the devotion of freedom and liberty I was sworn So, every emotion is studied, watched and controlled- Who gets paid, who gets disciplined, who gets rolled? So, transmitting beams, my coordinates, anywhere on Earth And, as radio waves, surveillance, satellites burst Open up your skull and let some knowledge come in Ya, crack open the cranium and let awareness begin Oh. And I don’t even know why The truth seems like a lie In my cell there is no sky When I was arrested in Shanghai When I was arrested in Shanghai When I was arrested in Shanghai

  8. Now for your reaction • You’ve now heard a song based in nonfiction, seen nonfiction images, and viewed a nonfiction video clip. • Let’s write some nonfiction. • Label your paper # 1. • Respond in complete sentences: • Why would this situation be written and sang about? • What else has happened in your lifetime that deserves to be written and sang about? WHY?
