  1. Good Touch, Bad Touch Sixth Grade Ms. Arzuman

  2. Day One • Define abuse. • noun- a corrupt practice or custom; improper or excessive use or treatment; to hurt or harm someone or something • mistreat, misuse, disrespect, violate, take advantage of • Types of abuse: mental (psychological), verbal, physical, drug, sexual, cyber, alcohol. • Sexual Abuse. Where have you heard this term? • Body Safety

  3. Three Goals of the Discussion • There may be students in the class who have a problem with abuse. • It’s important to know how to be a friend to someone who tells us they are being abused now or have been abused in the past. • Adults have the right to know how to protect children. *One way to help is to understand the problem so that we don’t make judgments that aren’t fair to abused people.

  4. Talents and Abuse • How does abuse affect ones talents? • Abuse is when the good positive messages about our worth and value get confused. • Kids stop believing in their own talents and potential and begin believing “If I don’t believe I matter, I might act like I don’t matter.” • Every human being is worthwhile!

  5. Physical Abuse • Give your own definition. • What hurts with physical abuse? The body Physical abuse: * is when someone is hurt physically, or on the body * the damage is visible * leaves a mark or scar * examples: bruises, broken bones, burns, bad scrapes, and welts • Abuse is illegal; spanking is not • Spankings are given as a form of discipline and are meant to get the child’s attention, not to cause harm.

  6. Emotional/Verbal/Mental Abuse • Give your own definition. • Thoughts and feelings are hurt with this type of abuse • EXAMPLES (being said frequently & often): being called stupid, being called worthless, wishing a person had never been born, telling someone they are a mistake • Emotional abuse tears up a person’s self-worth and dignity. • Discussed how emotional abuse can be caused online • Read the story about the father & son • Some hurts are not so easy to fix

  7. Emotional/Verbal/Mental Abuse • Main problem with emotional abuseit makes people feel like they are worthless or do not matter. Today’s Mantra: “If I believe in me, then I feel worthwhile. I believe in my abilities and myself. I’m not afraid of making mistakes while learning what my talents are and how to make the most of them. If I believe in me, then I can be patient with others who are trying to discover their talents too! If I believe in me, then I am kind and learn how to deal with my anger WITHOUT hurting others.”

  8. Name-calling • Racism: noun – poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race; the belief that some races of people are better than others • verb – to fail to take care of or to give attention to (someone or something) • when our basic needs aren’t met • Basic needs: home, food/water, clothing, education, love, safety Neglect

  9. Sexual Abuse • Why do you think we first learn about other types of abuse before sexual abuse in the Good Touch, Bad Touch program? • sexual abuse is forced or tricked touch of private body parts • key words: forced, tricked, fooled, manipulated • FORCE: is making someone do something they don’t want to doordon’t understand. It is also pressuring someone. • Give example of a “good” force.

  10. Sexual Abuse • TRICK: is lying, pretending, calling something a game that is not a game. It’s also fooling someone or making jokes that are not really funny. • key words: being conned, manipulating, bribing, blackmail • Tricks can feel like a trap! • Private body parts: the parts under your swimming suits – the parts between your legs in the front and back and also your chest. • Forget Our Reactions, Conscience, & Expressions

  11. Sexual Abuse • Sexual abuse is confusing! • Sexual abuse: forced or tricked touch of private body parts • key words: hurt, harm, mistreat, misuse, disrespect, violate, take advantage of • One reason sexual abuse is confusing is because of the tricks being played on the victim by the perpetrator (the person doing something illegal or wrong).

  12. Sexual Abuse • How common is sexual abuse? • FACTS: 1 out of 5 boys and 1 out of 3 girls are sexually abused before they turn 18 years-old. • Children who are sexually abused often believe they are the only child who has had this problem. They feel isolated and alone. • Why is it important to be educated on sexual abuse?
