  1. Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 Listeningin the silence

  2. We’re going to be looking at listening to God… …in the silence …in community …through Scripture Last week… we checked our hearing. On Listening to God…

  3. Be still. Read the Bible devotionally (listening for what God is saying to us). Worship with music. Write a letter to God. Take a walk with Jesus. Read something that helps you listen. Pray for people you care about. During longer sabbath times: sleep. What do we do in the silence?

  4. Set a goal you can reach regularly. For example—4 to 5 days a week • Experiment with time of day Morning? Lunch break? Before bed? • Start small 10 minutes a day, 4 days a week is better than an hour once a month To make it a habit

  5. What is a personal sabbath? • Uninterrupted time alone with God • To rest • To worship • To be restored • To hear from God • To get in touch with what is going on inside ourselves • To receive vision for ministry • To pray for others

  6. Give yourself a half day each month A morning, afternoon, or evening—3 ½ to 4 hours • If half day is too painful, work up to it. • Beware of measuring productivity. Camp out by the train track. • Partner. Give each other the gift of solitude. • Where? Hilltop Quiet Place Great Plains Nature Center/Botanica Park/lake Library/bookstore Getting started with a Personal Sabbath
