Teaching • There is rarely only one way to perform a skill or examination • There are lots of wrong ways to perform a skill or examination
Teaching • We endeavor to teach best practice • Not everything you see outside the skills labs will be best practice!
Teaching • Have objectives and voice them • Spend as much time on your ward as you can • Examine patents, take histories, do procedures • Don’t turn down any opportunity • Out of hours are quieter with less students around • Don’t get disheartened, some wards/doctors/nurses are better than others
Teaching • Doctors & Nurses are very busy • Don’t ask • “can you teach me something” • Do ask • “if I take a history can I present back to you in an hour” • “do you have 10 min to watch me examine…” • “can I take this blood sample if you watch me”
Teaching • One student from each group should have received an e-mail from: alastair.duncan@cmft.nhs.uk • That student is responsible for contacting the group’s tutor (an FY1 or FY2) to arrange a mutually agreeable time for bedside teaching. • Tutors have volunteered their time to help and are great sources of advice for exams etc.
Feed Back • Please help us help you • Done by emailing you a link to surveymonkey.com • Only takes 2 min • Be honest (but not rude) • Be constructive • Tell us how we can improve • We do listen (honestly)
