  1. NASA Structural Design Requirements 22 Jan 2007 Prepared by Chris Tutt Presented by Trent Martin

  2. Requirements Documents • Basic requirements for Space Shuttle flight are given in NSTS 14046. • Basic requirements for ISS payloads are given in SSP 57003. • Specific requirements for AMS-02 are given in the Structural Verification Plan (SVP). • SVP requirements are intended to envelope all other requirements. • All these documents are available upon request.

  3. Composite Requirements • Composites have special requirements due to their unique characteristics. • Material allowables must be based on statistically sufficient test data. • All load-bearing components must be acceptance tested to 1.2 times maximum expected flight load. • SWG may require stress analysis to be done with an ultimate factor of safety of 2.0. • Thermal-vacuum testing of structural adhesives may be required.

  4. Material Allowables • Material allowables must be reviewed with SWG. • Tests must include adequate numbers of samples. • Samples must be independent (not single piece of composite cut into multiple pieces) • SWG may reduce allowables measured during test to account for small sample size. • Early discussions with SWG are highly recommended.

  5. TCS Requirements • Stress analysis of the radiators has been done by CGS and reviewed by NASA. • Fracture analysis of the radiators will be done by JS with inputs from CGS and AIDC. • Static and modal correlation of the radiator math models will be done by JS at the integrated payload level.

  6. Manufacturer’s Tasks • AIDC will be expected to supply the following information. • Material certification data for all materials used in flight hardware. • Quality inspection records for critical items (fasteners, composites, etc.) • As-built drawings if significantly different from as-designed drawings. • Reports on all non-conformances that occur during manufacturing.

  7. Contact Information • NASA Project Manager • Trent Martin (001-281-483-3296) • trent.d.martin@nasa.gov • Jacobs Sverdrup Chief Engineer • Chris Tutt (001-281-461-5703) • john.tutt@escg.jacobs.com • NASA AMS Website (for documentation) • http://ams-02project.jsc.nasa.gov/
