  1. Welcome to an unknown and complex world

  2. Modern manufacturing • Today manufacturing is very much technically advanced • Computer Aided Design (CAD) • Computer Aided Engineering Analysis (CAE) • Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)

  3. Modern manufacturing • Meta data required to define an “end-product” • Individual parts composition • Assembly schema’s • Geometrical data • Manufacturing machine instructions (robots) • Test data • Production planning • Meta data exchange required • Engineers • Maintainers • Codifiers • Logisticians • Sellers • Buyers STEP ISO 10303 indirect result CALS

  4. STEP • ISO Standard for Exchange of Product Model Data • Many different manufacturing fields • Application protocols (AP’s) • Using same terminology (Integrated Resources or IR’s) • AP 209   Design Through Analysis of Composite and Metallic StructuresAP 210  Electronic Printed Circuit Assembly, Design and ManufacturingAP 218  Ship Structures AP 224  Mechanical Product Definition for Process Planning • The ultimate goal is for STEP to provide a means of describing product data through the life cycle of a product that is independent of any particular computer system. However, it will be a number of years before this goal is reached

  5. STEP • ISO Standard for Exchange of Product Model Data • What is a “product” ? • It can be a process • It can be manufacturing • It can be an IT system • One of the new areas is PLCS • Product Life Cycle Support • Data not so much related to the manufacturing process, but related to the “maintaining-in-service-life” , usage and disposal processes • AP239 (directly stemming from the CALS initiative and NATO Product Data Model)

  6. STEP and e-logistics • Meta data required to define an “end-product” • Individual parts composition • Assembly schema’s • Geometrical data • Manufacturing machine instructions (robots) • Test data • Production planning • Meta data exchange required • Engineers • Maintainers • Codifiers • Logisticians • Sellers • Buyers codification form, fit, function identification for buying/selling e-commerce on-line e-catalogues

  7. Parts technical data • To benefit, parts technical data capture should be enhanced and standardized • Standard coding production parts • Standard international part numbers • Standard technical description of parts • Many attributes

  8. ISO standard on technical description • Emerging e-commerce drives the need for standard of describing parts (items) • On-line product searching • On-line electronic catalogues • NATO Codification System (NCS) most authoritative doctrine on technical description parts • Move to adopt the NCS as part of ISO standard for parts technical data

  9. NCS tech data sufficient ? • Comes into play ECCMA (Electronic Commerce Code Management Association) • Objective : help develop open international standards for e-commerce • Supported by US DoD and UK MOD and agreement with NATO AC/135 • Development of Electronic Open Technical Dictionaries (eOTD) • Has adopted the NCS as its prime basis • Working with ISO to convert the ECCMA Open Technical Dictionaries into the ISO/IEC common dictionary interchange format (ISO 22745 approved by the TC184/SC4) • Automatic codification (screening for form, fit and function)

  10. Better searching/buying • On basis of eOTD’s, all Suppliers make their products available on the internet via web-services • Electronic catalogues • Users can search , on-line , items based on attributes • Search engines • Instant e-commerce

  11. Where will this lead us ? Acquisition, design, manufacturing Industry better market and sell STEP Userbetter searchand buy Standard productattributes eOTD NATO Codification….Reduction of inventories Suppliers, small production

  12. Codification at Source • Research and development was initiated to determine opportunities to exploit the use of international standards to increase codification productivity • SOURCE CODIFICATION TOOLS • Project to improve prototype and perform “proof-of-concept” • Embedding catalog data in design files at their source • Reduced time and cost of codification

  13. Smart Codification • Research and development was initiated to determine opportunities to exploit the use of international standards to increase codification productivity • SMART CODIFICATION TOOL • Project to improve prototype and perform “proof-of-concept” • Automatic codification • Reduced time and cost of codification

  14. Where will this lead us ? Acquisition, design, manufacturing Industry better market and sell STEP Userbetter searchand buy Smart Codification eOTD AutomaticNATO (Smart) Codification…Reduction inventory Suppliers, small production

  15. Then and Now

  16. Then and Now

  17. Then and Now 8 to 10 Hours! 1 to 2 Hours! FIIG INCMRC

  18. Tomorrow! STEP eOTD 30 Seconds! Smart Codification Tool On-line Buy/Sell catalogue

  19. Conclusions • NCS has most exhaustive data set for describing Items of Supply • NCS data set covers wide range of manufacturing areas • ECCMA eOTD is based on the NCS data set… • ISO 10303 (TC184) interested in adopting ECCMA eOTD data to describe individual piece parts of products ISO NWI 22745

  20. Conclusions • Cataloguing at source is more accurate, more efficient and ensures more accurate data throughout life cycle • Web services and high speed faceted meta data search engines are changing the landscape of the Internet • eOTD availability as open free standard combined with easy to implement XML catalogue formats is fuelling rapid adoption • More details of the move from NATO to commercial standards can be obtained by visiting www.codification2005.org
