Ud. - You, formal talk directly to someone older or in a position of respect. Ustedes: You guys Ellos: They (all males/ mixed group) Ellas: They (all females) Él: He Ella: She

La concordancia(Grammar “agreement”) • In Spanish, everything in a phrase must agree in gender and number. • For example: My parents are old. • My parents (mis padres) is masculine and plural. • So… we need the 3rd person plural form of the verb ser (son). • Adjectives modify in both gender and number, so… viejo becomes masculine and plural (viejos)to match padres. • My parents are old becomes: Mis padres son viejos.

  11. Interesante Notice – the “no” goes BEFORE the conjugated verb. In English, we say the professor is not very interesting, but in Spanish it is literally: “The professor not is very interesting.” If you put the no where we do in English, it sounds VERY strange: El profesores no muyinteresante. El profesor no esmuyinteresante.
