  1. FAITHFUL BELIEF or FATAL UNBELIEF John 12 By Pastor Phillips Koh

  2. A) THE CLOSURE OF JESUS’ PUBLIC MINISTRY (vv 1-19) • A focus on different people in this section:

  3. 1) A direct spotlight on Mary’s anointing of Jesus (vv 1-11) • Costly ointment of pure nard was used to anoint the feet of Jesus. • An act of sacrificial devotion as well as an act of utter humility • Jesus made a two-fold response to Mary’s action: • Jesus viewed it as prophetic (verse 7) • Jesus regarded it as sacrificial (verse 8)

  4. 2) A pointed spotlight on Judas Iscariot’s pilfering habit (vv 5-6) • Judas was labeled as a ‘thief’ for stealing from the common fund. • Judas was most likely the treasurer of the apostolic band • Judas’ fall from grace was due to his deceptive action of indulging in sin

  5. Application : Do you and I nip sin in the bud?See Ephesians 4:30-32 • The clear danger of anger: • Anger takes a life of its own when it is not dealt with immediately • First, anger establishes a foothold when left unattended (verse 27) • Next, anger becomes a stronghold when nursed and cultured

  6. Resentment • Hatred • Malice • Bitterness • Anger eventually degenerates into: Illustration : the sad case of Esau who also fell from grace in Hebrews 12:14-17

  7. 3) A powerful spotlight on the crowd’s reception of Jesus (vv 12-19) • Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a young donkey • The crowd’s adulation of Jesus by shouting ‘Hosanna’ • Jesus regarded as the Messianic king who would deliver them from political oppression. • Jesus however saw himself as the Prince of Peace who came to deliver sinners from spiritual oppression.

  8. B) THE LOOMING SHADOW OF THE CROSS FOR JESUS (vv 20-43) • This section records the last public discourse of Jesus: • Jesus spoke of his self-sacrifice in order to become a blessing to many (vv 20-24) • The coming of the Gentiles to Jesus signifies universal nature of his death on the Cross (vv 20-21)

  9. Application : The mode of entry into eternal life is to ‘hate’ one’s life in this world (verse 25)

  10. Jesus referred to his death as ‘glorification’ (vv 27-36) • The term ‘lifted up’ has a double meaning in this context (verse 32) • Jesus ‘veiled’ his message to the unbelieving (vv 37-43) • The unbelieving will forever remain in spiritual darkness (vv 35-36)

  11. C) THE PRONOUNCEMENT OF JUDGMENT TO THE UNBELIEVING (vv 44-50) • Jesus did not come to judge the world but to save the world (verse 47) • See also John 3:16-18 • Jesus will use people’s response to him as a basis for judgment (verse 48) • This is the reverse side of the offer of grace to sinners

  12. Jesus only spoke words which are authorized by the Father (vv 49-50) • Jesus works in perfect harmony with the Father in everything.

  13. CONCLUSION How do we increase in spiritual fruitfulness? The way to fruitfulness is through self-sacrifice for the sake of others (verse 24) Jesus is challenging you and me to move to a higher level of spiritual living.
