Informal adult and community learning • develops new skills and interests; • strengthens social ties and family relationships; • increases people’s confidence , e.g. in their ability to learn new things and make a positive contribution to society; • encourages social and civic participation; • empowers individuals and communities; • improves subjective wellbeing.

  5. The Transformation Fund (2008-9) • A £20m fund to support innovative informal adult and community learning initiatives. • Over a million learners took part. • Developed new partnerships between public, voluntary and community and private organisations. • Encouraged new and different learners to participate. • Opened up access to learning in new ways and places.

  6. Engaging men • Learning and volunteering • Peer champions • Sports • Heritage • ‘Green skills’ – e.g. horticulture, furniture refurbishment • Outdoor pursuits • Family learning
