  2. Robert the Bruce • 1298 Robert Bruce took the title of Guardian of Scotland. • Claimed the throne. • In 1320 Bruce and the Scottish nobles issued the Declaration of Arbroath He is a National Hero in Scotland

  3. Declaration of Arboarth • Signed by Robert the Bruce and the Scottish Nobles • Independence ‘For as longs as one hundred of us shall remain alive we shall never in any wise consent to submit to the rule of the English, for it is not for glory that we fight … but for freedom alone.’.

  4. Treaty of Edinburgh • Treaty of Perpetual Peace • First lull in fighting in over 200 years. • This treaty recognized Scotland’s independence. • Ended the 30 years War of Independence

  5. 1290 Expulsion of Jews • There were many wealthy Jews in London • In 1290 the aristocrats owed large sums to the these lenders • One usurer called in all the debts. • There was great outrage because many people lost their land and ancestral homes. • “Neither a borrower or lender be”. • Many Jews were put to death in the Tower of London
