  2. Life of William Shakespeare • Born on 26th April 1564 • Died on 23rd April 1616 • He was an English poet and playwright. • He has been considered one of the greatest playwrights of all time.

  3. THE HENRIADS THE HISTORY TETRALOGY

  4. Tetralogy • A series of four (4) related plays are called a tetralogy. • The history plays Richard II, Henry IV Pts. 1 and 2 and Henry V are collectively called the Henriad. • These plays were concerned with English nationhood, identity, destiny and imperial ambitions.

  5. RICHARD II

  6. Richard II is an extravagant, indecisive king. • He banishes his cousin Bolingbroke from England and takes his uncle’s wealth upon his death. • His cousin returns to claim what is rightfully his. • Bolingbroke usurps the throne and becomes king. Inadvertently he commits regicide as king Richard II is murdered.
