  1. Date: August 15, 2004 Sunday Morning Speaker: Todd Rogers Scripture: 1 Pet 3:21 What It Won’t Do!

  2. NT Bible baptism: Always immersion! • John 3:23 (NKJV)23 Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized. • Matthew 3:16 (NKJV)16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.

  3. Acts 8:38 (NKJV)38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. • Romans 6:4 (NKJV)4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. • Colossians 2:12 (NKJV)12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

  4. NT Bible baptism always for the believer. • John 1:12 (NKJV)12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: • Mark 16:16 (NKJV)16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

  5. Acts 2:41 (NKJV)41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. • Acts 8:12 (NKJV)12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

  6. NT Bible baptism will: • Wash away your sins! • Acts 22:16 (NKJV)16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

  7. Acts 2:38 (NKJV)38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  8. NT Bible baptism will: • Cloth you in Christ! • Galatians 3:26-27 (NKJV)26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. • Thayer wrote, “to become so possessed of the mind of Christ as in thought, feeling, and action to resemble him and, as it were, reproduce the life he lived.”

  9. NT Bible baptism will: • Circumcise your heart! • Colossians 2:11-12 (NKJV)11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

  10. The spiritual circumcision with which God circumcised us occurred “in the removal of the body of the sin,” in that act of God’s by which He stripped off and away this body like an old, filthy garment that one throws aside to be rid of for good and all” (Lenski). • Titus 3:5 (KJV)5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;…

  11. NT Bible baptism will: • Save you! • 1 Peter 3:21 (NKJV)21 There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,…

  12. NT Bible baptism will not: • Guarantee eternal life! • 2 Peter 3:17 (NKJV) 17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; • Galatians 5:4 (NKJV) 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

  13. 1 Corinthians 10:12 (NKJV)12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. • Hebrews 6:4-6 (NKJV)4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

  14. NT Bible baptism will not: • Make you a member of a local church. • Acts 26:18 (NKJV)18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’ • Acts 2:47 (NKJV)47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

  15. Matthew 16:18 (NKJV)18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. • Colossians 1:18 (NKJV)18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

  16. NT Bible baptism will not: • Solve all of life’s problems. • Marriage problems, money worries, bad habits, may all will remain after baptism. • Many have gone to baptism thinking that all of this will go away! • Life’s problems will still exist after baptism! • However one’s attitude towards these problems should change.

  17. Colossians 3:2 (NKJV)2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. • Romans 8:28 (NKJV)28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. • Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

  18. NT Bible baptism will not: • Wash away previous marriages. • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. • John 12:48 (NKJV)48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him— the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

  19. Matthew 19:9 (NKJV)9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” • Matthew 5:32 (NKJV)32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

  20. NT Bible baptism will not: • Remove temptations. • In fact, temptations may increase! • Matthew 4:1 (NKJV)1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. • James 1:2 (NKJV)2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,…

  21. 1 Peter 1:6 (NKJV)6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,… • 2 Peter 2:9 (NKJV)9 then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,…

  22. Baptism (immersion) will not forgive, save, or put into Christ – one who is not a believer! • 1b1 used in the NT of the conviction and trust to which a man is impelled by a certain inner and higher prerogative and law of soul. 1b2to trust in Jesus or God as able to aid either in obtaining or in doing something: saving faith. Strong, J. (1996). • Acts 3:19 (KJV)19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;…
