DIVORCE – A Testament To Failure Mt 19:3-9 & Mk 10:2-12 • Another Jewish attempt to put Jesus at odds with Moses and the Law…thus exposing their impure motive Mt 19:3 Mk 10:2 • Divorce “for any cause” was already prevalent • Evidenced by secular historians (e.g. Josephus) as well as teachings from popular rabbinic schools (i.e. Shammai & Hillel)
DIVORCE – A Testament To Failure Mt 19:3-9 & Mk 10:2-12 • Jesus’ initial response points the Pharisees back “to the beginning” Mt 19:4-6 Mk 10:5-9 • He quotes Gen 1:27 2:24 • Because these were the “original” principles God set forth re: marriage, this was the logical point of reference for a discussion on divorce
