  8. India’s Road to Independence • In the 1660’s India became trading partners with the Britain. • By 1760 Britain gained political and economic power over all of India. Indians began to resentbeing ruled by a foreign nation. • Indians distrusted the British government an cultural practices. • A Nationalist movement began in India to fight for the country’s independence. • Supporters of the nationalist movement, such as M. Gandhi resisted the rule of the British government. • After fighting in WWII, Britain could no longer afford to keep India under its rule. On August 15, 1947, Britain offered India its independence as its own nation. The Republic of India was established.

  10. Vietnam’s Road to Independence • Vietnam has fought for its independence for many years. It was controlled by the Chinese until it gained its independence 939 after years of fighting. • Vietnam spent many years thriving as one of the most advanced cultures in Southern and Eastern Asia until the late 1800’s when France laid claim to Vietnam. • The end of WWII was the beginning of Vietnam’s second fight for freedom. On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh, a Vietnamese Communist Party leader declared Vietnam’s independence from France. • It took many years of fighting by the Viet Minh (army) for Minh’s dream of freedom became a reality. • The Viet Minh persuaded the French to negotiate Vietnam’s independence in 1055.
